Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the theatre of Jean Cocteau in its search for new expression. The first chapter presents Jean Cocteau's precursors and their parallels with his theatre, and his early formation in the theatre. The second chapter deals with his contemporaries in the areas of dance, music and art. Chapter three treats the plays of Jean Cocteau in the light of their sources and innovations.
