Abstract: | North Grimsby township occupies a unique position. Not only does it form a part of the famous Niagara Falls Belt, but it is also situated half way between the two industrial areas of the Niagara Peninsula, Hamilton to the west, and Niagara- St.Catharines to the east. As well, it is virtually cut in two by the Niagara Escarpment which runs in an east -west direction through the township. The township forms the north-west corner of Lincoln County; to the north is Lake Ontario; immediately west is Baltfleet Township of Wentworth County; to the south and east, respectively, are South Grimsby and Clinton Townships, both of Lincoln County. North Grimsby Township lies between 43° 9' north latitude and 43° 14' north latitude and between 79° 31' west longitude and 79° 39' west longitude. Its western boundary bears North 18° East; the southern boundary East 18° South and the eastern boundary bears approximately North-South. The general shape of the township is rectangular, modified greatly on the north by Lake Ontario. Discounting the irregularity of this northern boundary, the area of the township is approximately 28 square miles, seven miles from east to west and four miles from north to south. The two main highways and one of the rail lines of the township run east and west and this, combined with the prominence of the Niagara Escarpment and the narrowness of the lake plain, tends to emphasize the rectangular shape. |
